Does Updating My Profile Mean I’m Looking For A Job?

Posted by stylock on 25 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Ways to Use LinkedIn

This is one of those questions that people ask me when they don’t want anyone to know they’re looking for a better job…

The inference is that if they do something that only people who are looking for a job do, they’ll be labeled such.

Either way you might answer the question, the advice should still be “so update your profile”.

Just Who Have I Contacted Through LinkedIn?

Posted by stylock on 22 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Ways to Use LinkedIn

One of the things I like the most about computer systemns is that I no longer have to remember everything. It’s hard enough to remember the really important stuff - the merely important already takes a back seat. So “useful” information like “have I ever sent a note to John Smith” pretty much drops off the bottom of the list…-)

LinkedIn helps me remember.

When To Pay For Your LinkedIn Membership

Posted by stylock on 17 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: About the Service

In a recent email, David asks: “What are the main advantages of paid membership?”

What he didn’t ask, and what I figured was implied by his question was “Should I pay for a membership?”

What We Didn’t Know About Groups…

Posted by stylock on 11 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Groups

A potential storm is brewing on LinkedIn with the just released “Group Search” feature over duplicate groups.

In the past, you just couldn’t tell what groups existed, so finding any group that you wanted to belong to was almost a chance event.

Well it appears that in the void of that knowledge, multiple people setup multiple groups with the same purpose…

Group Search Available On LinkedIn

Posted by stylock on 11 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Groups

A longstanding request of the LinkedIn community to be able to find out what groups exist has been satisfied by LinkedIn this week as they rolled out “Search Groups” last night.

It’s not perfect, but it’s a whole lot better than what you could find out yesterday!-)

LinkedIn Across The Miles

Posted by stylock on 01 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Ways to Use LinkedIn

Becky McCray calls it “Making LinkedIn work for small town pros” on her gust blog at Small Biz Survival, but I think the key point she makes is that LinkedIn helps when you aren’t very local…

If you’re the only Internet Marketing Expert in a town of 2,000 people, you won’t be able to have coffee with many peers - but with LinkedIn, you can maintain your existing connections and build new relationships through introductions without ever traveling

And that’s a great thing…

Guilt Is Something You Give Yourself

Posted by stylock on 27 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: Endorsements

Shane Schick titled his article “LinkedIn Guilt: The new social networking disease” over on IT World Canada, and suggests that there’s issues related to asking for recommendations.

I think he’s overplaying the issue, but go ahead, read his article and come back to this window;-)

I’ll explain…

Protect Copyrights From The Orphanage

Posted by stylock on 24 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: Outside LinkedIn

This is a bit off from my normal LinkedIn post, but I’ve got a need to call attention to legislation that will jeopardize small and independent artists - hence the desire to protect copyrights from the orphanage…

Both legislative branches are considering bills around “Orphan Works”, but with a slight twist of the words, nearly anyone’s work will fit that definition

Let me explain…

Searching for Job Candidates

None of my regular readers will ever face this issue, but I’ll talk about it anyway…-)

One of the more interesting questions I’ve seen is from an individual who was asked to endorse someone they didn’t know. Their question was - should they, and also - why would someone ask like that?

Well, if you’re going to connect to people you don’t know…
